What Vinyl is

Vinyl is a macOS desktop application that renders a photorealistic animated turntable directly on your Mac desktop. It connects to Spotify and Apple Music to display live album artwork, track name, and artist information for whatever you are currently listening to. No login or account linking is required - Vinyl detects playback from either music player automatically using local system notifications.

How it works

When you open Vinyl, a turntable scene appears on your desktop with a spinning platter, tonearm, and original artwork rendered on real wood. The entire scene is drawn live. Vinyl runs as a menu bar app - close the window and it keeps running quietly in the background. It can launch at login so your desktop always has the turntable ready. When you play or change a track in Spotify or Apple Music, Vinyl picks up the playback change and updates the album sleeve and now-playing details automatically.

Who built it

Vinyl was built by Shiv Shanmugam, an independent developer. The app launched in July 2026 and went viral on Reddit and Twitter, becoming one of the most popular Mac desktop customization apps for music listeners. Shiv builds and maintains Vinyl as a solo project.

Why it exists

Most desktop customization tools - Wallpaper Engine, Lively Wallpaper, Rainmeter - are Windows-only and have no music integration. macOS offers limited native desktop customization beyond wallpapers and screen savers. Vinyl fills that gap for Mac users who want a live, interactive desktop element that responds to what they are listening to. It is the only macOS app that combines a photorealistic turntable with automatic Spotify and Apple Music integration.

Pricing

Vinyl costs $4.99 as a one-time purchase. There is no subscription, no recurring charges, and no account creation. Updates within the same major version are included. Vinyl is sold through Gumroad and can be purchased at vinylformac.com.

Privacy

Vinyl does not track you. It reads playback notifications locally on your Mac and downloads album artwork from the music service's image servers. No personal data, device identifiers, or listening history is sent anywhere. Read the full privacy policy for details.
